Shiatsu
Shiatsu is an ancient form of massage meaning, “finger pressure.” Although it is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine it was created in Japan during the early twentieth century. In this uniquely Eastern form of medicine Shiatsu practitioners address the meridian system, a map of energy highways and points on the body. By stimulating these meridians a Shiatsu practitioners can bring a persons chi (energy) into balance.
Shiatsu is typically done on a padded mat on the floor or on a low table. However Shiatsu techniques can be adapted for those with special needs. Unlike Swedish massage, no oil is used in Shiatsu and the client remains clothed. This special setting lends to the techniques that continue to make Shiatsu a popular form of massage.
“Point” work is the cornerstone technique of Shiatsu. This means applying various forms of pressure along the client’s meridians. It can be as delicate as a fingertip on a cheekbone to much stronger pressure on hardworking shoulders. Other techniques include softening, stretching, joint rotation, rocking, and percussion. Clients receiving Shiatsu often find themselves to feel more relaxed and balanced. They also find that Shiatsu is a beneficial part of their holistic health aiding in flexibility and releasing of tension.
